Most people think osteoporosis is a disease of the elderly. But prevention of osteoporosis should
start at early age.

The osteoporosis prevention  includes general lifestyle preferences, diet and some specific
treatments

  • Regular and frequent physical activity of reasonable intensity is recommended

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Regular weight-bearing exercises  are very helpful at all ages for good bone health

  • Eat a healthy diet and follow a healthy lifestyle.

  • Make sure you get your daily recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D
    throughout your life.
  • Calcium is the most important mineral for bones. It maintains bone in strong
    condition & it prevents and treats osteoporosis.
  • Vitamin D is required for absorption of calcium from diet. Deficiency of vitamin
    D can lead to deficiency of calcium, as calcium will not be absorbed from food
    material.

  • Avoid smoking and reduce the amount of alcohol you drink.

  • When appropriate, have a bone density test and take medication.

There are certain medications for prevention of osteoporosis. If Osteoporosis is detected in
early stge i.e. osteopenia stage, medications can be used for prevention of osteoporosis.
