Fat is concentrated source of energy. It is constantly required for the body, but only in
moderate quantity. Requirement is 10 to 30 % of total caloric intake.
Fat constitutes 18 to 25 % of female body wt & 15 to 20 % of male body weight.

    Fat is required for following significant functions –

  • Source of energy

  • To absorb vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E, K

  • Shock absorber under the skin and around
    vulnerable organs like kidneys

There are various forms of fat like saturated, unsaturated & trans fat.

Unsaturated fat, Saturated fat

Unsaturated fat
Unsaturated fat like monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fat is good for the body,
because it increase HDL cholesterol levels (good cholesterol) & reduces LDL
cholesterol (bad cholesterol)

Saturated fat
Saturated fat & trans fat is not good for body. Both these fats increase LDL
cholesterol (bad cholesterol) & decreases HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
Saturated fats can be consumed upto 6 % of total caloric intake.

Trans fat

Trans fat is byproduct of hydrogenation of vegetable oils. Trans fat is produced when
hydrogen is added to vegetable oils to increase shelf life, flavor & stability of food.

Consumption of even small quantity of food with trans fat can produce adverse effects.
Health hazards of food with trans fat
  • Increases bad cholesterol ( LDL cholesterol)
  • A diet, which is mainly of food with trans fat, is an unhealthy diet & can accelerate
    atherosclerosis & thickening of arteries - Deposition of fat in walls of blood vessels
    causing narrowing, clogging & decrease blood supply to organs
  • Cardiac or heart problems
  • Trans fat can affect pancreas & can cause diabetes.



    Food with trans fat
    Trans fat is mainly present in hydrogenated oils but list
    of food with trans fat includes deep fried fast food,
    bakery products, packaged snacks, margarine &
    crackers. Reuse of same oil can further increase the
    trans fat content of oil.


Recommended fat-
Unsaturated fat like monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fat should be used for food rather
than food with trans fat, which is not good for health.
