What is diabetes?
- Diabetes is a chronic disease in which patients have high levels of sugar in the blood.
- Less insulin formation by pancreas or resistance to insulin, or both can cause
diabetes. It is a disease in which the either body produces less insulin or body cannot

- Most foods that we consume finally enter into body in form of carbohydrate, fat &

What are the ways for detection of diabetes?
Urine analysis may be used to look for glucose and ketones from the breakdown of fat.
Fasting blood glucose level -- diabetes is diagnosed if fasting blood sugar is more than 126
mg/dL on two occasions.
However, levels between 100 and 126 mg/dl indicates impaired fasting glucose or
pre-diabetes.
Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level -- diabetes is suspected if random blood sugar is
more than 200 mg/dL and accompanied by the symptoms of increased thirst, increased
urination, and fatigue. (This test should be confirmed with a fasting blood glucose test.)
Does any dietary supplements help in diabetes to control blood sugar?
Studies have shown that some trace minerals chromium, vanadium offers great promise as
nutriceutic supplements to enhance insulin action in diabetes.(1)
Chromium increases insulin binding to cells, insulin receptor number and activates insulin
receptor kinase leading to increased insulin sensitivity.(2)
Alpha lipoic acid & Evening primrose oil are also helpful in control of diabetes & its
complications
